Japn 400: Advanced Interpersonal Communication
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in interpersonal communication through the formulation of research questions and conducting research utilizing appropriate technologies. Taught in Japanese.
Course Reflective Narrative
This Advanced Interpersonal Communication course that I completed in Fall of 2013 fulfills the Research and Technology Major Learning Outcome for my B.A. in Japanese Language and Culture.
In this course we began preparing to create our capstone. We mulled over potential ideas, refined those ideas, and eventually came up with our capstone theme. Once we established our theme, we came up with our research questions, which allowed us to start our background research. At this point, we started using the research and technology methods that fulfill this Major Learning Outcome. Mainly, we focused on learning how to use the CSUMB library's website which has many databases and websites that can be used for research. The database that I found most helpful was the Jstor database. I also began coming up with survey questions during this class and comparing notes with other students to see if my questions made sense.
The title, research questions, surveys, abstract and review of literature section of my capstone reflect the work that I accomplished in this class. Please use the link below or go to the Capstone page to see the evidence.
What understandings or knowledge did you gain from this course that is a significant contribution/outcome for your major/this MLO? (AHA-Moments)
I came away from this class with a good understanding of how to narrow down a research topic. I had to change my topic three times before finding just the right subject to focus on. I realized that one has to be patient when doing research and that everything doesn't come together in the beginning. I also realized that creating a survey is harder than it looks!
I would like to develop my research skills more. More specifically, I would like work on developing the patience to go through all the sources with time and care so I don't miss any valuable information.
I hope to be able to use these skills in my professional life. I will be teaching English in Japan in the near future, so hopefully I can research fun and creative lesson plans for teaching English to Japanese students.
